The Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome

Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) is the term used for a variety of simultaneously occurring malformations of the heart and aorta in neonates. The left ventricle of the heart is underdeveloped and completely closed off from the aorta, so that blood flow to the aorta is provided by the ductus arteriosus to ensure that essential organs are supplied with blood. HLHS is among the most serious congenital heart defects and is fatal in 99% of cases if left untreated.

A number of options are available for successful treatment of HLHS.  Hybrid procedure is particularly safe and reduces patient stress to a minimum. A heart-lung machine is not required and the number, complexity and duration of interventions can be reduced.

  • sinus-SuperFlex-DS The self-expanding sinus-SuperFlex-DS stent in open-cell design is designed specifically to effect temporary patency of the ductus arteriosus. With the ideal combination of flexibility and radial force, the stent adjusts perfectly to the curves of the vessel wall.
  • sinus-SuperFlex-DS The self-expanding sinus-Repo-DS stent in closed-cell design is for additional use, in case of a coarctation of the descending aortic arch above the ductus connection.
  • The application system features an exceptionally easy-to-use and safe pull-back system. Radiopaque markers, braided sheath and atraumatic soft tip facilitate guidance and positioning. To ensure accurate positioning, the stent is fixed in the application device by the anti-jump system - a integrated mechanism which reliably prevents the stent from jumping.
  • The hybrid procedure is a cooperative procedure combining techniques of catheter intervention and cardiac surgery.  After birth, both branches of the pulmonary artery are surgically narrowed using bands, reducing the high flow of blood to the lungs and directing the blood through the patent ductus arteriosus into the aorta. A stent is implanted to maintain blood flow through the ductus arteriosus. The open-cell design of the sinus-SuperFlex-DS stent provides the optimum combination of flexibility and radial force to establish temporary patency in the ductus arteriosus. In cases of coarctation of the descending aortic arch where stenting of the ductus arteriosus is required, the  sinus-Repo-DS stent is used in addition. The closed-cell design of this stent maximises radial force and enables the repositioning of the stent (up to 80% of the nominal length).
